The Minute Romance

The autumn rain poured heavily down on the street, covering every possible surface known to man. Puddles forming from the potholes that began to fill with every drop of rain, that the grayish-white clouds provided as it loomed above the town. Sidewalks were a shade darker, almost a charcoal black, from the water droplets that continuously cascaded down upon it. The town’s people rushing to get underneath the ledges of the shops to escape from being drenched. Beams shining through the down pour of ran, from the headlights oncoming and going of cars; all rushing to get out of the rain and home.
Somewhere in midst of the crowd, traveling to and fro, a girl appears heading in the opposite direction. Ducking and weaving around everyone to avoid running into them.
She walked with a purpose down the pavement underneath her one colored umbrella. Dressed in a black blazer, purple blouse, and a pair of skinny jeans. Her black heels clacking as she hurried towards the small boutique that was soon closing. Making sure to keep her feet dry, she stopped at the edge of each street, and carefully stepped over each puddle in the crosswalk.
Halfway down the street, a boy travels from the book store towards the girls direction, uncaring that he’s already soaked. He walked in the most relaxed way, without any kind of protection from the rain. His messenger bag hanging on his side, the strap over his right shoulder and chest, as it continuously bounced off his hip every time he took a step.
The soles of his shoes separating the puddle of water, into a divided ocean, as it splashed over unto the surrounding pavement. Quickly making his way across the crosswalk and onto the sidewalk again.
They met halfway down near the middle. He looked up from staring at his feet and she took her eyes off the clothes displays in the window shops; their eyes met and stayed locked for only a minute. In that minute, they both connected on a intimate level. A sense of clarity rolling off her and onto him, just as his clarity rolled off him and onto her. There were no words spoken. Only an exchange of smiles. A simple connection, brought on by one look. There were no need for words for that small fraction of moment.
The boy and girl continued on walking, not giving another thought to that moment they had shared, heading towards their destination…never to come across one another again.
Now, granted, this may be repetitive and redundant but listen and think about it, will you?
Often times when you’re walking down the street, you make eye contact with someone else and there is a moment of clarity when you make an intimate connection. You feel it and you know they feel it, too, even though there is no exchange of words.
You continue walking and never see them again. But that moment, that look… that was everything…
